Project: Nibi’s Water Song
Empowering Grade 1 students through Indigenous storytelling and clean water activism.
My first project involved Grade 1 students creating group posters based on the theme of Nibi's Water Song, an Indigenous children's storybook. I read the story with the students and facilitated a discussion about its message. The students were inspired by the theme, which emphasized the importance of clean water for Indigenous peoples.
Why did I choose this book?
- I chose Nibi's Water Song because it emphasizes the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and the natural world, particularly the vital importance of clean water.
- For Indigenous communities, clean water is not only a basic necessity but also holds cultural, spiritual, and traditional significance.
- Access to clean water is essential for their health, well-being, and the continuation of their cultural practices.
- The book offers an opportunity for students to learn about this crucial issue and to develop respect and understanding for environmental challenges.

Working On The Project
- It took us a few weeks to complete the project, beginning by thoroughly discussing the story.
- Children shared their perspectives on the critical issue of access to clean water.
- They expressed concern that Indigenous peoples should have access to clean water as soon as possible, and that the government should take action.
- We decided to design posters on the theme: "Indigenous Communities Need Clean Water."
- I discussed different parts of a poster and we brainstormed the design and message.
- Students were divided into groups of 4 to 5, and they were thrilled and excited to start.
- Finally, we presented our posters as a demonstration to raise awareness among students and teachers.
